I am grateful for empathy.
Yesterday was rough. I wanted to crawl into a hole and bring my kids with me. I wanted to put up safety barriers to protect my children and anyone else vulnerable to violence and hate. I was in despair and it was hard getting out of bed. I know that so many of us woke up with the same feeling.
But I got up and I trudged through. I saw the morning brightness in the fiery sky. I saw all of the beautiful colors of the amazing sunrise. I was slowly beginning to feel better. And just then, Adam, my colleague decides to come by and check up on me. His body language told me that he wanted to say something about the recent events. He could sense my overwhelm and he could read into my funk.
And just like that, he crawled into "my hole" with me and showed me empathy. Through no words, he was able to tell me, "hey I know it's dark and it's overwhelming. I'm with you and you're not alone". He was the big bear in the Brene Brown video.
"Empathy is feeling with people. It fuels connection." Thank you Adam for your empathy today.
